the new haelan farm

View of the farmyard from the house

Healan Farm is a tiny speck of paradise on the vast expanse of the Canterbury planes. We are on the outskirts of Oxford, a small township wish nestles at the foot of the southern alps.

We moved out to near Oxford mid winter 2008 the farm we were renting was sold so in November 2009 we made our new home on on the fringes of Oxford at 67 Weld st.

We have had lots of people live here, each adding a special something to the place and we welcome others, as guests, wwoofers, or long or short term residents.

On the way in to Oxford yesterday i had to stop to take this photo.
A hot air balloon hangs over Oxford in the stillness of a frosty winter morning.

We have 15 hens lusted after by a beautiful but arrogant rooster, 13 sheep, 2 Kune Kune pigs and two cats “Greyway” and her (not so small anymore) kitten, “Petiete” and “Apache” the tiny shetland stallion.  The garden is Growing like wildfire, last season we had, corn, butter beans, lettuce, silver beet, spinach, pumpkin, zucchini, cucumber, tomato, potato onion, garlic, rhubarb, apple, quince, strawberry, carrot, broad beans, leek, spring onion, miners lettuce, celery, chicory, radish….. heaps of herbs…. and i think more i forget. This year we had a bit of a slow start as we moved in the spring but we moved the whole garden, soil and all, and its doing beautifully in its new home! I want to sell produce and plants at the gate, Possibaly eggs too.

This is Toku Moemoea, our dream, at the moment its a dream we need to support with half a dozzen part time jobs between us! But what we hope for is to be able to support ourselves on this land and share this beautiful place with others. To this end we have many plans… to open a farmstay here… have weekend retreets for disavantged youth, the interlectualy disabled, and other people in need…. run workshops on gardening, herbalism, natural medicine and making your own herbal beauty products….. sell plants and produce, herbs and flowers….. use it as a creative space to make beautiful things, Matthias makes wonderfull rustic wooden furniture and Magenta sews, makes jelwery and takes fantastic photographs… explore our site to see some pictures of these things.
